I know…you all have goals but do you actually believe that you can reach those goals? Are you actually committed to those goals or are you simply interested in the idea of achieving them? Yes, it sounds harsh but “The truth will set you free but first it will piss you off!”
I would love for EVERY client that joins the gym to meet their goals and live happily ever after but that is just not the case. We all start the journey off with various levels of excitement and momentum and the greatest intention of meeting the goals that we set. At some point life starts making its own rules and we are forced to adapt and adjust. The most successful among us have figured out ways to adapt and adjust to keep things moving forward even if not at the same pace as we started for a while. The key is to not stop completely or take a break as we all know how easy it is to get out of the habit and how hard it is to get back.
Here are my tricks for maintaining focus and staying on track:
- Prep/Plan Your Meals – you’ve heard it before so this is not new. You can make your meals at the beginning of the week and simply reheat or you can plan what you will make each day if that works for you. The key is finding what works for YOU!
- Plan/Schedule Your Activity – from your workouts to your tennis, walking, pickleball, running, etc. We tend to do better with things that are planned/scheduled in our lives…as long as we stick to the plan.
- Have Non-negotiables – from go to meals/snacks (I use yogurt and protein shakes) to the minimum amount of activity (I use squats, push-ups and walking) that you have to get done during the week you need a baseline. If life is kicking your butt one day/week you can fall back on those things to eat and those activities to “tread water” until you can get your bearings and get back to your normal plan. The key is that you didn’t completely ditch your activity and nutrition plan. You can feel good about the choices that you made during a tough week.
- Give Yourself Some Grace – your journey is not meant to be perfect. You will have great days/weeks and not so great days/weeks. Breathe, get a grip and give yourself credit for the work that you’ve put in. One good meal/workout doesn’t make you fit and as long as you are alive to try again the next day then do so.
All of these things will help you create a belief that you can meet your goals…not matter how long it takes. Your confidence will grow the longer you stick to your journey. I’ve seen many of you cheer for your favorite sports teams or at your kid’s sporting events…you need that same energy for meeting your goals!
