HERstory – Sherry S.

I had been working out at a cross fit style gym, but found that after a knee injury and surgery that it was no longer a good match for me. After a few months of recovery, I was gaining weight, losing muscle, and just not feeling good about me. After seeing an ad for Aspire for Women on Facebook, I decided to give them a call. After my first session, I knew that it was where I needed to be. I love the tailored approach to fitness. They take the time to craft the correct workout for me that addresses my strengths and weaknesses. I love the small gym camaraderie without the competition of cross fit.

I have discovered that working out is fun. I “played around with fitness” for the first 18 months. I would go to the gym and then return home and not change anything that I was doing, eating, or drinking. Upon seeing the photos from my son’s wedding, I knew that I had to make significant changes. I was not able to out work my fork! I began working with a dietician and medical team to lose weight. I made the commitment to 3-4 workouts each week. As the weight began to disappear, I discovered that I could do more in the gym. I am very careful about what I eat and plan what I eat each day.

Success is a great motivator. In the gym, I am enjoying trying new movements and weights. I am not always successful, but have discovered that there is a lot more that I can do. Surprisingly, my knees have responded well with the weight loss and increased activity. Currently, I am almost to my weight goal, but a long way from my fitness goal.

The more that I work out and see success, the more that I want to work out.  I am enjoying the challenge of increased weights and new movements. We are planning a trip to Hawaii this summer and I want to be the first one up Diamond Head and to the waterfall on the Big Island! I do not want to look or act like a 60 year old lady and thanks to Aspire for Women, I am on my way to that goal!
